EXHIBITION
Perles de troc / African Trade Beads
at the Galerie Dauphine, 1st floor
from November 14th, 2021 to January 2nd, 2022
The Marché Dauphine, in the heart of the Puces de Paris – Saint-Ouen, invites you to discover an exceptional collection! Márcia de Castro and Guy Maurette, two passionate collectors unveil more than 6000 glass beads that they have brought together in the exhibition “Perles de troc / African Trade Beads” at the Dauphine gallery (1st floor of the Dauphine Market) from 11.14.21 to 2.01.2022.
The thousands of pearls presented were made in Egypt and Europe (Venice, Bohemia, Germany, France). These pearls, mixed with other trade and commercial goods, served as currency in exchanges with the populations of the African and American continents, between the 7th and the beginning of the 20th century.
If the history of ornaments and pearls merges with the history of humanity, these pearls tell us a painful part of our recent history.
After being heavily traded for centuries, today the market for ancient pearls has shifted to the United States. There, pearls became objects of study, collection and speculation.
In 2015, Márcia and Guy created the Traveling Museum of Ancient Pearls in France (MIPAF). MIPAF is an original project and a unique experience.
Collectors travel across France with more than 6,000 pearls acquired mostly from African markets. These pearls tell us 1000 years of history.
The collection of Márcia de Castro and Guy Maurette has been exhibited in the most prestigious glass exhibitions in France and Europe: Sars-Poteries, Palau-del-Vidre, Briare, Carmaux, Claret, Blangy-sur-Bresle, Saint-Just -Saint-Rambert, CERFAV, Baccarat, Glass Museum of Charleroi (Belgium), Altare (Italy) …
The exhibition consists of:
-more than 6000 pearls,
-a slideshow retracing the main stages in the history of pearls,
-an exhibition and sale of necklaces made with collectible pearls as well as books,
-an educational and cultural environment.
Each pearl is unique and the little piece of history it contains too. Márcia and Guy will welcome you to the Dauphine gallery (1st floor of the Dauphine Market), every weekend from November 14, 2021 to January 2, 2022.
